British soprano Ella de Jongh is a recent graduate of the prestigious Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she studied under the tutelage of Professor Janice Chapman and coach Michael Pugh, graduating from the Artist Masters Course in July 2019 and She has been fortunate enough to participate in masterclasses in song and opera with the likes of Brenda Hurley, Tobias Truniger, Susan Bullock, Elaine Kidd, Roderick Williams, Dame Ann Murray, David Gowland and Birgid Steinberger.
Ella is delighted to be covering the role of Miss Jessel with English National Opera in their production of Britten's The Turn of the Screw as well as making her debut with Regent's Opera as Ortlinde in Wagner's Die Walküre early next year. Recent notable engagements include chorus of La Bohème as well as covering Wellgunde and Third Norn in Wagner’s Ring Cycle at Longborough Festival Opera, making her debut at Opera Holland Park as part of the Young Artist cast of Hansel & Gretel playing The Gingerbread Witch. Ella also made her European debut in the role of Contessa Almaviva in Tuscany with Spira Mirabilis, before jumping into the role of Die Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier with Saffron Opera Group, to critical acclaim. Ella recently revived her role as Contessa Almaviva with Saffron Opera in February and was named as a 2023 Serena Fenwick Artist with British Youth Opera. Ella was also named as the reserve candidate for the Carole Rees Awards for The Mastersingers Wagner Vocal Competition in 2023.
In her second year of the Opera Course at the Guildhall School, Ella performed the roles of Silvia in Mascagni Zanetto and Tartagliona in Dove The Little Green Swallow. In the summer of 2019, Ella was fortunate enough to be an Alvarez Young Artist with Garsington Opera in their highly acclaimed production of Smetana's The Bartered Bride at Wormsley Estate under Director Paul Curran and Conductor Jac van Steen. She is thrilled to have returned to Garsington Opera for their 2021 critically acclaimed production of Der Rosenkavalier where she covered the role of Marianne as well as singing in the chorus. Ella was delighted to have returned to Garsington Opera as an Alvarez Young Artist for the 2022 season covering the role of Foreign Princess, singing in the chorus of Rusalka and covering the role of ‘Miss Jessel’ in Louisa Muller’s award-winning revival of The Turn of the Screw. During the season, Ella was hugely humbled and grateful to have been awarded the Garsington Opera Simon Sandbach Chorus Award in recognition of personal and professional contributions and musical skill.
Other notable engagements include performing a Pre-LSO Czech Platform at the Barbican Hall as well as the UK Premiere of Andrew Norman's newly commissioned opera A Trip to the Moon with London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. Operatic roles include Cleaning Lady I'm Cleaning, I'm Cleaning (world premier), The Witch Hansel und Gretel and First Lady The Magic Flute, Donna Anna Don Giovanni, Giorgetta Il tabarro, Elizabeth 1st Gloriana, Die Marschallin Der Rosenkavalier, Contessa Almaviva Le nozze di Figaro, Wellgunde and Third Norn Der Ring des Nibelungen.
As an oratorio soloist, Ella is in high demand and concerts include Mendelssohn Elijah, Vivaldi Gloria and Magnificat, Bach Magnificat, Tippett A Child of Our Time, Handel Messiah, Mozart Requiem, Haydn Missa in Augustiis, Goodall Eternal Light: A Requiem and Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem. Ella has recorded a number of CD’s with Faber & Faber, as part of the national Sing Up! campaign and in 2014, completed a commercial for Apple under award winning Marketing and Advertising director Ian Thatcher.
Ella has been supported by the Mario Lanza Foundation, whilst at the Guildhall she was a Haberdashers' Opera Scholar and the recipient of The Nicky Bird Scholarship, for which she was hugely honoured.
